Summer 8.0 Programme Empowered Over 1,200 Children

Magboro, Ogun State [9^th September 2024] – The Dolly Children Foundation (DCF) is thrilled to announce the successful completion of its Summer 8.0 programme, which saw over 1,200 children actively participating in educational, skill-building, and mentorship activities across four centres. This year’s summer initiative has once again exceeded expectations by offering underserved children a holistic and impactful experience, contributing significantly to their academic, personal, and creative development.

 

Summer 8.0, an initiative focused on providing meaningful opportunities for children during the long school break, incorporated academic subjects, entrepreneurial skills, and personal development activities. The program also offered free meals and food supplies to alleviate the economic burden on caregivers, especially in light of rising food prices.

 

Key Highlights from the Summer 8.0 Programme were as follows:

Children from Primary 3 to SS3 received academic instruction in core subjects alongside entrepreneurial classes in baking, beading, soapmaking, upcycling, tailoring, hat & hair making, and more. These skills empowered the children to develop their creativity and explore potential career paths.

 

The programme featured mentoring sessions covering emotional intelligence, career guidance, and inspirational talks. Through these sessions, children gained critical life skills to help them succeed both in and outside the classroom.  

 

One of the highlights was the introduction of coding classes, where children worked on personal projects using design tools like CapCut and InShot. These digital skills enhanced their problem-solving abilities and creativity, preparing them for a future in technology.

 

A special reading session focused on safety, using the book “The Adventures of Muna” by Ugochi Obidiegwu. This not only engaged the children’s imaginations but also taught them valuable lessons about staying safe.

 

Through partnerships with organizations like Gamaliel and Susan Onosode Foundation (GAMSU), Kids Being Kids Initiative, REEL Foundation, Lagos Food Bank Initiative and others, the program provided daily meals and snacks to the children. Additionally, caregivers received food supplies, including rice and noodles, ensuring that the children were well-nourished and able to focus during their time at the programme.

 

The impact of the Summer 8.0 programme was not only felt by the children but also by their families and the larger community. Caregivers expressed their gratitude for the opportunities provided through the initiative, with Mrs Johnson, one of the caregivers saying:  

“This programme has given our children opportunities we never imagined they could have. From the free meals to the skills they’ve learned, it has been a true blessing.”

Joseph, a young participant who has been with the programme for four years, shared his excitement about this year’s focus on Nelson Mandela for his artwork:  

“Each year, I grow and learn something new. This summer, I was proud to create an artwork about Nelson Mandela, and I can’t wait to do more.”

 

As schools are set to resume, DCF is reflecting on the success of Summer 8.0 and looks forward to expanding the programme in future editions to reach even more children.
