Culture of Reading

Reading culture is the continuous practice of seeking and gaining knowledge through written words. This practice can be built by reading books, newspapers, journals, encyclopedias, magazines, articles, etc. A love for reading is not a skill one is born with; it is a habit that can be built.

A major way to develop a reading culture amongst children is to promote an enriching reading environment; an environment where:

  • Reading materials are readily available and accessible.
  • A lot of talks about the importance of reading are given.
  • Games that promote reading are available.
  • Book-themed days are celebrated.
  • Reading nooks are available to students.

Reading is a skill that can unlock a lot of potential in children. Reading also helps to expand a child’s vocabulary and enhance their knowledge base.

When a reading culture is established, reading will become a habit that takes little to no effort. It will give rise to a nurturing environment where children, on their own will begin to read materials they have chosen by themselves or that were recommended to them. At this point, children have come to see reading as a part of their lives.
