Extra-mural Classes, In-School or at Home?

In Nigeria, extra-mural classes and private tutoring have become an integral part of the education system. Many students engage in after-school lessons, either at home with private tutors or at formal tutorial centres run by schools or institutions, for which they pay a fee.

However, not all students have access to these lessons. Some cannot afford the fees, while others are denied the opportunity by caregivers who may prioritize other activities. In some cases, children are engaged in daily hawking or rigorous household chores, leaving them with little or no time to focus on their education.

Additionally, some teachers see after-school lessons as a way to earn extra income, and this financial motivation often leads to poor performance. As a result, while lessons are being conducted, the students may see little to no improvement in their academic progress.

Recognizing these challenges, Dolly Children Foundation has set up free after-school classes in schools within the Magboro Community. The foundation ensures that these students receive quality instruction, particularly on subjects where they face difficulties. Only qualified teachers are selected to lead these sessions, allowing for diverse learning techniques that cater to the individual needs of the students.

These after-school classes also serve a secondary purpose: they help reduce the risk of social vices, such as child abuse. By staying in school for additional learning, children are less likely to be subjected to strenuous chores or street hawking, activities that some caregivers might impose if they were not occupied in school.

Through these initiatives, Dolly Children Foundation is not only supporting the academic growth of children but also helping to create a safer and more supportive environment for their overall development.
